ST. FRANCIS’ EPISCOPAL CHURCH

COMMUNIQUÉ

   NOVEMBER 2009 EDITION

On Thanksgiving

On a clear, warm, fall morning, I took a walk.  And as sometimes happens when I’m walking, feelings and thoughts that have been growing within me will come into awareness.   What came to me that day was a sense of happiness and contentment about my life.  Part of that was due to the simple joy that a beautiful day can bring to any of us, but it was more than that.  There was, for me, a sense that despite some very real sources of stress, my life was full of good things:  people who are important to me, the richness of my work in the parish, the opportunities I have to make music, and, of course, God.

It was good to notice the goodness in my life, especially as I am as prone as any of us to be more aware of (and to complain about!) what feels less good in my life -- being too busy, the stress of having many commitments and responsibilities, ill health and so forth.  Being aware of the many gifts that are part of my life brought forth a response that is less frequently present in me than it ought to be -- gratitude.  I found myself simply saying “Thank you” to God as I walked.

I share this moment with you because I believe that gratitude to God for the many gifts we receive often has a smaller place in our Christian lives than it should.   I’ve noticed over the years, for instance, that when there are opportunities in worship for the offering of requests and thanksgivings, that the requests are many, and the thanksgivings are few.  Of course, I’m not saying we shouldn’t voice our requests to God, nor that we should refrain from naming what feels broken and needy and not good in our lives.  But I am saying that gratitude for what is rich and good and gifted in our lives needs to be a frequent part of our prayer -- and not just at Thanksgiving!

Br. Curtis Almquist, SSJE, frequently says what a difference it makes to receive each day not as a given, but as a gift; that is, not as a series of task or challenges to get through, but an open and gracious opportunity in which unexpected blessing can come our way.  Curtis' wise words are a way of disposing ourselves towards an attitude of gratitude each day.  I commend them to you so that thanksgiving can take a greater place in your life.

Faithfully,

Jack+

Attention Parents!

We need acolytes!  If your son or daughter is eight years old or more, and would like to become an acolyte for St. Francis’ Church, please see Fr. Zamboni or Tiffany O’Sullivan.  Your child would serve approximately twice a month, and the schedules are made up to take vacations into account.  Please consider this worthwhile and educational ministry in our church.

********************

Sunday School

We meet in our Sunday School rooms down stairs (just follow the feet on the wall), at 10 AM on Sunday, and join our families for the celebration of the Eucharist.  Any and all guests are welcome at any time.

We welcome the return of Mary Pfeiffer to her ministry with our 3 to 5 yr. olds.  We are so grateful to the already busy moms who filled in for her with story, craft, and play during her absence, and who continue to help out all through the year.

Our young people are walking with Jesus as they work well together in the church kitchen, make donations to Operation Gratitude, providing care packages to those who serve in harm’s way, and make Christmas cards (Yes, before Halloween!) to be included in gift packages for seamen, provided by The Seamen's Church Institute.

We continue to follow our curriculum and plan to focus heavily on PEACE as a theme for the upcoming holiday season.

Information, call Barbara Dalto 732.563.2243.

St. Francis’ Shut-Ins

Most of the parishioners below are no longer able to attend church regularly.  By remembering them in our prayers and sending them cards, we let them know they remain part of our parish family – a great blessing to them in the isolation they often experience.

STEWARDSHIP

Growing Together

We hope you have enjoyed learning about each other and St. Francis as we shared our experiences of being touched by God in our Growing Together Conversations.  By using the Mutual Invitation Process, we were invited to share and listen to all those in our group.  We told of our experiences, values and what we anticipate.  The charts hanging on the church walls show the amount of experiences and blessings we have all received by being members of St. Francis Church.

Our time, talents and resources are given to us by God.  Our longing to share compels us to care for our family, have compassion for others, and spread the good news of God’s love.  Share generously.  When you give of yourself, you touch many lives; most of all your own, for in giving you shall receive.

During the first week in November, Inspiration Sunday, we will receive our intention cards.  We will have the opportunity to reflect on our weeks of “conversation” and make a monetary pledge to our Church.  Your intentions are a sincere help in planning and your offering can be changed at any time.  Together, we keep the blessings flowing.

On November 8th, which is Gratitude Sunday, you will be asked to return your pledge card by placing it in the basket as you enter church.  As each parishioner responds with their pledge, a portion of a wall chart, located in the Narthex will be colored in to represent the response and the progress of our goal.  We are praying and hoping for 100% participation in answering this call.

On November 15th, Consecration Sunday, the Ushers will bring the basket of completed pledge forms to the altar at the Offertory.   They will be blessed:

All things come of thee, O Lord; and of thine own have we given thee.

On November 22nd, Thanksgiving Sunday, all are invited after Mass to a Pancake Breakfast in thanksgiving of completion of this part of our Stewardship work.

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances. (Thes 5:16-18)

It has been a pleasure working on the Stewardship Committee and “Growing Together”.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us or Father Zamboni.

Sincerely,

Elaine Patania

Carroll Wilson

Prayer Books & Hymnals - Thanks to the following parishioners who donated prayer books & LEVAS hymnals.  The books are already being used in our worship at St. Francis.

Sharon & Alan Benjamin, Carol Burns, Rillette Hammond, Barbara Herman, Tom Jackson, Pam & Vin Maiolo, Myzie Family, Heather Nunes, Barbara O'Neill, Carline & Paul Sinckler, Princess Thomas, Cordell Trotman, Carroll & Muriel Wilson, & Fr. Jack Zamboni.

There are still a few books available for donation. There is a form in the Narthex. Cost is $20.  Any questions, please see Fr. Jack or Pam Maiolo.

Book Group

We meet in Milbank Hall (or the kitchen where it's warmest) each Wednesday for about an hour, beginning at noon with bag lunches.

We are presently discussing "Big Stone Gap" by Adriana Trigiani.  On December 9 we will discuss "The Christmas Sweater" by Glenn Beck.  The story is based on the childhood of the author.  Perhaps it will give us a clue or two to what makes this controversial conservative commentator tick.

We are open to all.  Sit in and give us a try.  Information, call Barbara Dalto at 732.563.2243.

Craft Group

Our crafters meet in Milbank Hall at about 1 PM, on Wednesdays, following Book Group.

On Oct. 21 we began crafting dish towel creations, and on Nov. 11 we switched to making treats using melted chocolate.  Our wares will be offered for sale in the narthex on Dec. 6, 13, and 20, proceeds to benefit the church.

Join us for hand sewing and then finger licking fun.  Bring a favorite CD to share.  We like working to music.

Information, call Barbara Dalto at 732.563.2243.

Music Lessons Given

Dr. Robert Thomas, former organist & music director at St. Francis’, is taking music students for instruction in piano, music tech. (notation, sequencing, sampling, etc.), composition, ear training/sight singing, theory, and history. Information can be had at http://retmusic.com/lessons.html, and he can be reached by email at lessons@retmusic.com or by phone at 732/650-1471.

ONE WOMAN WHO MAKES MAGIC

Our own Daryl DeRogatis has been recognized as an outstanding woman in Central NJ by WMGQFM - 98.3.  As a "woman who makes magic", Darryl will be honored at the 6th annual awards banquet on Nov. 16th at the Crowne Plaza in Monroe. Daryl was recognized on air on Oct. 9th for her outstanding work in the Piscataway School System Food Service Dept.  - In addition to making sure all her "school kids" are taken care of, Darryl also makes sure all is well at home.  Here is the letter written to WMGQ to nominate her as one of the Women Who Make Magic for 2009:

Text Box:

There is an exceptional woman who has worked at Martin Luther King School, in Piscataway, for the past 11 years. She not only makes “magic,” but brightens up the lives of all our students. Her name is Daryl De Rogatis, or more affectionately known as Mrs. D. Daryl wears many hats; she not only is the cafeteria manager/lunch lady, but also the receptionist/nurse in our aftercare program. For some of our students, she is the first and last person they see here at school every day.

Daryl has a quick wit about her, bursting with energy and cheer. Her smile is infectious and makes everyone feel so at ease. Even her co-workers often comment, “Where does she get all her energy?” She is at school every day at 6 AM, while most of us are just getting out of bed. She arrives early to start making breakfast for any student, or staff member, who might be too busy to have breakfast at home. She can rattle off hundreds of students’ names flawlessly in record time, while making sure something from every food group is on their tray. Simultaneously she is taking their lunch money, debiting their accounts, and quickly letting them know how much money is still in their lunch accounts. This must all be done in record time since there are about 125 students in each lunch and they only have 25 minutes to eat. No one will ever go hungry at MLK School, Daryl would never allow that! Even if you don’t have any money, you can owe Daryl, or get a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for free.

Daryl juggles her school family and her own family like a well-oiled machine. She definitely has a way with children that we all have come to admire. Daryl may be our cafeteria manager, but she is also a well-educated person. She has a degree in Computer Science but chose to work in the school system to be close and available to her own children while growing up. Daryl has a special needs son who is also a cafeteria worker in the Piscataway School System.

We could go on and on about this special woman, but what we truly want to say is, she is someone who makes “magic” in our students’ lives every day at MLK School.

NOVEMBER 5 (for laity) [New date, was 29 October]

Reading the Lessons Aloud Effectively
Leader: Melissa Semmes-Thorne, president of Speaking with Power and Effectiveness for Adults and Kids (SPEAK)

How often have you been called upon to read scripture that was simply “impossible?” You know, the one with forty-six names from the Old Testament or one of St. Paul’s interminable run-on sentences! Ms. Semmes-Thorne will work with you to improve your skills in the oral interpretation of literature, i.e., reading aloud in church. The object is not to teach you to read aloud (you already know how to do that), but to help you to learn to read aloud more effectively for your congregation’s understanding. This workshop will take place in the sanctuary of the church. You will learn a series of simple tools to use in preparing a reading and have an opportunity to work with these concepts in a coaching session involving readings from the lectionary.

Anti-Racism Conference: The Church’s Role in Building a “Post-Racial” America
Leaders: Byron Rushing, Massachusetts State Representative, Boston, Massachusetts

Byron Rushing’s long service in Massachusetts state government, in the Episcopal Church, as an outspoken advocate for human rights, civil rights, peace and justice, will inform his address. Mr. Rushing is uniquely qualified to move comfortably back and forth on the secular-sacred continuum. He will focus on anti-racism strategies in both church and state, and the conference may be expected to address some of the more controversial issues around racism in society such as affirmative action, educational testing, access to employment in such key public service professions as the police and public health. Sponsored by the Anti-Racism Commission.

Songs & Sweets Report

We are happy to report that our Songs & Sweets concert was a big financial success, as well as a wonderful musical treat for all who attended; our final tally came to $687.  Thanks go out to the following people for their unselfish help in making this event a rousing success:

Elaine Patania, with the help of Judith Yannarello and Coral Brown, for setting up the Sweets, Pam for taking tickets, the fantastic vocalists, John-Andrew Fernandez, Danielle Sinclair, Linda Mindlin, and our very own Father Jack, and to Elma Adams, who did the most work of all the musicians, to Pam and Vin Maiolo and Norma Tucker who handled most of the clean-up; and to all who came and pitched in where needed, THANK YOU!

Cash for Gold:

We are in the works of setting up a date for a Cash for Gold Party.  The Cash for Gold party will be schedule for after a Sunday Mass.

I encourage you to launch a treasure hunt of your own! Here, size doesn't matter. Little earrings and charms add up to big bucks. Clasp broken or gemstones missing? No problem. Bitterly out of style or remarkably ugly? Hey, it's still worth its weight in gold.

How it Works...

Your gold will be inspected and checked for its purity and then weighed.  Then you will be paid cash for the value of the gold that you are selling...More Information to Follow…
